Cooler weather in Guatemala

frioNovember is here and with it the cool weather visits again my beautiful country…

Although these days have been too rainy for November, we guatemalans have been able to enjoy the cool weather of the last two months of the year. Maybe we’ll never have a white Christmas, but we do have a cool one… You know, compared with the rest of the year.

These are the days when we’re able to wear those beautiful coats, boots and scarves, drink more coffee (tons more than usual) and prepare ourselves for the best time of the year: even for those who don’t celebrate Christmas, eating the traditional tamal, made with rice or corn, filled with chicken or pork, with a cup of ponche sounds like a great idea.

I remember as a kid, really looked forward for this season, not only because of the presents, but for that special thing that you could smell in the air, added to the cohetes smell of course ;) .

So, I strongly encourage you to visit us during this marvelous season, come and have a Merry Christmas Chapin style. :)

Do you need a Personal concierge during your travel?

1229519_55738725

Ok, you’ve planned for that business trip or vacations that you need so much, you have your passport ready, your visa, you’ve booked a suitable hotel and have packed your suitcases… Once you arrive to that new place and checked in at the hotel, what now?

If you’re traveling for business purpouses then you’d probably have already a schedule to follow (meetings, seminars, etc.); however, during your free time you might start wonder what to do next. Remember, assuming that is the very first time you’re visiting that place, otherwise you’d probably have already done some planning according to your past experiences.

And what about those visitors with the only and most important purpouse of RELAXING? I mean, true, there’s a lot of travel agencies to advice you about the best tours, hotels, trips, spas, etc. But, are they making sure every step of the way that you get what you want? Are they offering a customized service and assistance? If they are, well then, lucky you!

Unfortunately, not all the tour operators / travel agencies / travel agents are available for you every step of the way.

So, reviewing a little what we talked about what does a concierge does, remember we mentioned that the most important function is to assist you in everything that you need.

Let’s put it this way. If you’re on business travel, and during your free time need to shop for family souvenirs, you’d probably won’t have enough time to window-shop first. You need to go for it already, after all time is money. So, here’s when hiring a personal concierge can really facilitate your life. Either you ask him / her to drive you to the best place where you can find what you need or, ask him / her to shop it for you and drop it off at the hotel. And this is just ONE example among lots of them….

Remember, next time you’re in Guatemala for business or pleasure, give us a call or send us an email, we’ll be glad to assist you. :)

Before anything, what does a concierge do?

375675_service_bellI wanted to take the time to explain a little more about what does the word concierge means to understand what he/she does, altough, this word is more familiar for english and french speakers than to spanish speakers, such as Guatemalan people…  In fact, introducing these kind of services into Guatemala’s market has required patience and perseverance, precisely because in our latinamerican countries the word concierge is mistaken with “conserje” (janitor in spanish), leading people to believe that a concierge is a janitor…. Talk about lost in translation…(however, I’ve found out that in France this word is used sometimes for janitor… Not sure yet)

So, generally speaking, when people talk about a concierge, would they be referring to a janitor? In 95% of the cases, not. Usually they speak about hotel’s Concierge area, but from many years now, Concierge services are not just offered at hotels, these services are available for anyone who needs an extra hand.

Some use the term “personal assistant” instead of concierge, and yes, it’s proper, since the concierge does precisely that: assist you. That’s why, ever since such services became available, we now find any kind of specialized concierge… Meaning that there are Wedding and / or Event Concierge, Travel Concierge, Lifestyle Concierge, etc… Or, some can do just everything listed before.

For example,  I recently found an interesting trend: Baby Concierge, or Baby Planner, who will take care of everything related with bringing a baby into this world… From planning the baby shower to hiring the baby room decorator, you name it.

And yes, before I forget it, what does the word means?  Literally means “keeper of the candles”, from the french comte des cierges. Apparently in the medieval times there was a special servant in charge of keeping the candles for the visitors, and from there it evolved to the door man who keeps the keys of a building until the most common connotation: the person who is in charge of assist the residents of a building or hotel.

Arriving to Guatemala…What to do next?

evita_el_temor_a_volarWhether you arrive to Guatemala for business purpouses or just to enjoy a nice vacation period, once you get to your hotel you wonder “What now?”…

If you have visited Guate before, you are already familiar with our weather, our people, our food… If not, what are you waiting for? There’s a lot of interesting things you can learn about such a small and nice country… Still, you’d probably need a guiding hand to work your way around the city.

Usually, the hotel staff can help you out, specially the front desk staff if you don’t speak spanish. However, aside of the basics and general tips, it’s up to you to make the best of your visit.

Then, why not calling a  personal assistant during your stay? A personal assistant or personal concierge can guide you through things like where to shop for souvenirs, where to try guatemalan food or how to move around in a safe way (saddly, Guatemala has many red areas in terms of violence that you definitely must avoid).

So, next time, give us a call or send your inquiries to mayordomofiel@gmail.com, we’ll be glad to facilitate your life…

** We have special packages for people who have to stop over in our Airport for several hours, like Centro Histórico tour...(all of our services are customized)**
